This course is run in partnership with the University of Wolverhampton at Wolverhampton City Campus and Paget Road Campus of City of Wolverhampton College.
It is a 2 year, full-time or 2 to 3 year part-time course (UCAS code: P500FdA/BJour).
This Foundation Degree:
- equips you with the broad range of technical and research skills needed to work in the digital communications industry.
- Acquire digital production skills using industry-standard edit facilities and a well-equipped TV and radio studio in the University's brand new Technology Centre
- Benefit from a strong practical emphasis on production, including tasks such as producing a short news sequence, as well as professional placements with local media centres and businesses
- Opportunity to progress to courses including Digital Media, and Media and Communication Studies usually following a third year of study.
- 80-140 points including a minimum of 60 points from one or more full 6-unit awards or one full 12-unit award
- You should have GCSE English and Mathematics at Grade C or above or Key Skills Communication and Application of Number at Level Two

This is a full-time three year course run at Wolverhampton College in collaboration with Wolverhampton University. It offers those with an interest in journalism the opportunity for in-depth study, and is one of very few courses to equip a student with page layout, design and graphics as well as skills in newspaper reporting.
240 UCAS points from A/AS Levels plus Maths and English GCSE grade 'C' or above.
Journalists of today are expected to be multi-skilled. The content of this course includes practical skills in news and feature writing, and editorial design skills in page layout and graphics. It is also set against a strong theoretical background giving graduates a firm understanding of journalism law, ethics and local and national politics.
Modular assessments and placement assessment. Coursework.
Gain professional accreditation with the professional body, National Council for the Training of Journalists, at Wolverhampton College, or equivalent professional qualifications in broadcasting or periodic magazine journalism. Graduates may also go straight in to the industry.

The courses are designed for young people who wish to work in the Media Industries. The courses also provide an excellent foundation for entry into Higher Education.
The City of Wolverhampton College has been granted the Media CoVE (Centre of Vocational Excellence) status for the Creative Industries and offers its students professional production equipment and excellent teaching. Students will develop the skills needed for a wide range of media careers.
To be eligible for these courses, you should be at least 16 years of age and possess five GCSEs at grade A-C (English Language is essential) or an equivalent qualification.
All applicants need to be able to demonstrate an active interest in media production and have the necessary study skills, i.e. to be able to manage time effectively and work towards a given deadline.
By meeting these prerequisites you can show that you will be able to cope with and benefit from the course.
The Media Production courses offer a vocational qualification for students interested in becoming a part of this fast-moving, ever changing and exciting industry. We have designed the course to offer a broad base of skills relevant to the needs of local employers.
Group A - Moving Image Students - Practical Productions
Working as part of a team the course offers the opportunity to gain practical production experience in:
- Documentary
- Music Promos
- Drama
You will learn the required production skills from developing & researching ideas, through filming to post production techniques. You will also develop skills in animation and the new media. Critical studies will enable you to develop an understanding of the media industries and how to read the media. You will also have the opportunity to develop the personal and communication skills required for a successful career.
Group B - Journalism Students - Practical Productions
Working as part of a team the course offers the opportunity to gain practical production experience in news production, factual programming and new media.
You will learn the required production skills from developing & researching ideas, through filming to post production techniques. Critical studies will enable you to develop an understanding of the media industries and how to read the media. You will also have the opportunity to develop the personal and communication skills required for a successful career.

Group C - Games Development Students - Practical Productions.
This new practical course will develop your skills and understanding of gaming, one of the fastest growing media industries. You will have the opportunity to create and develop your own games as well as acquire skills in 3D animation, digital graphics and narrative image making. You will develop the knowledge and skills that are highly sought after by both employers and universities.

You will work on assignments and practical exercises which will take the form of simulated work situations and which will develop and test your ability to solve problems on your own and also by working in a team. A period of work experience is also included.
This Level-3 qualification in Media Production will help you to pursue a career in the media industry or you may wish to progress to a degree course.
Many of our past students have successfully progressed to Universities such as Nottingham and Trent, Birmingham, Plymouth, Sunderland, Blackpool and Southampton.

This course is accredited by the National Council for the Training of Journalists.
This course is offered on either a Full-time or Part-time day release basis. The day release course is designed for trainee journalists already in the newspaper industry. Students who wish to pursue a career in journalism are encouraged to apply for the full-time course after achieving A-levels or as post-graduates.
Wolverhampton College has NCTJ accreditation which means it has to agree to very strict guidelines to teach the complete syllabus and undergo regular inspection visits to ensure high standards. It is the only college in the country which offers the day-release training.
Trainee Journalists already employed by newspapers for the day release course.
Post graduates and students with at least two 'A' Levels must arrange to sit an NCTJ aptitude test and interview for the full-time course.
You will need to register with the NCTJ before joining this course - application forms can now be downloaded from the accredited courses section of the NCTJ website
The courses include essential law for journalists including contempt of court, defamation and reporting restrictions, local government, central government, practical newspaper writing skills and T-Line shorthand up to 100 words per minute.
Various practical activities are also included such as court reporting and covering stories at local councils.
The full-time course offers work placement opportunities throughout the Midlands.
Assessment is based on the NCTJ preliminary examination. For a full certificate passes must be obtained in the following:-
- Law, parts one and two
- Local Government
- Central Government
- One practical writing examination with portfolio of published material.
- 100 wpm shorthand
(Total of six exams plus shorthand)
The NCTJ preliminary examinations are the professional qualifications recognised by the newspaper in this country and abroad. After further newspaper experience, a trainee with the full certificate may go on to the final NCE National Certificate.
Costs for day-release trainees are met by newspaper publishers where the trainees are already in employment on newspapers.
Students who are 18 on 31 August 2007 - tuition fees will not be charged subject to certain criteria being met.
Fees for students who are not assessed under this criteria will be £980. This covers tuition, exam and registration fees. |
