This course provides an introduction to the practices and debates surrounding the range of media industries from television, film and the press to the impact of new technologies including the Internet.

Entry Requirements:
Five GCSEs at Grades A-C including English Language.

Course Content:
AS Unit 1: Reading the Media - It is the aim of this unit to introduce students to the Key Concepts with which they will familiarise themselves by applying them to a wide range of media texts.

AS Unit 2: Textual Topics in Contemporary Media - In these topics the emphasis will be upon the analysis of contemporary texts, an understanding of the principles underpinning them and an engagement with the issues relevant to them.

AS Unit 3: Practical Production - Coursework - This unit involves the application of the Key Concepts to a practical production project involving a media technology.

Assessment:
Assessment will be through written studies on various aspects of the media, through exercises in media production and critical analysis of particular media products.

A high level of personal motivation is essential for successful completion of the course.

Media Studies A2 Level

Course Content:
A2 Unit 4: Texts and Contexts in the Media - This unit involves the application of the Key Concepts both to a variety of texts and a range of relevant wider contexts.

A2 Unit 5: Independent Study - Coursework - Students will use the Key Concepts to investigate or research an independent area of study which will deal with a contemporary text, topic or issue and its relevant contexts.

A2 Unit 6: Comparative Critical Analysis - In this unit the Key Concepts are applied to comparative study of texts and their relevant contexts.

Assessment:
A2 Unit 4: Texts and Contexts in the Media - 1 hr 30 mins exam.

A2 Unit 5: Independent Study - Coursework.

A2 Unit 6: Comparative Critical Analysis - 1 hr 30 mins exam.

First Diploma in Media
The aim of the course is to provide students with a general introduction to a range of media based practices.

Generally suited to those looking to take their first steps toward a media based career: particularly school leavers or those with practical experience and no higher qualifications in this area as well as those wishing to re-train in a new field.

Entry Requirements:
A reasonable standard of Literacy + Numeracy is required equivalent to four GCSE's at grades D-G, including English Language.

An interest in Media is also required although no previous experience is necessary (but an advantage).

Course Content:
The Modules include 3 Core Units:

  • Research for Media Production
  • Introduction to Media Industries
  • Introduction to Media Audiences & Products

4 Specialist Units

  • Video Production
  • Photography Techniques
  • Web Authoring
  • Media Production Project

In all units pre, post and production techniques are explored from basic recording techniques to editing and web publishing, camera and lighting skills to storyboards and broadcasting providing students with an insight into a range of media possibilities.

Assessment:
All units are assessed via coursework assignments.

The course combines 'Hands On' practical opportunities alongside theoretical practice leading to the BTEC First Diploma (Level 2). The final major project may take the form of a short video, multimedia or web production.

Progression/Next Step:
The course provides the experience and qualifications necessary to access the BTEC National Diploma in Media (or equivalent Level 3 course).

Employers looking for Level 2 qualified media employees also recognise this qualification.
