Music Technology National Certificate
College Title: BTEC National Certificate Level 3

This course is ideal for learners who are interested in developing the skills required for a career in sound engineering and the music industry. Candidates should have a keen interest in all aspects of music production with the emphasis on music technology.

Entry Requirements
Four GCSEs at grade C or above (including English Language)

Course Content
Learners will gain the skills to use computers for music creation, develop recording techniques in the 24 track studios and develop an understanding of the music industry. They will also develop research skills, create music for film, and develop projects.

Modules include:

  • Computer based systems
  • Planning a music recording
  • Production project
  • Music Industry
  • Sound recording techniques
  • Special subject investigation
  • DJ techniques
  • Music tech in performance
  • Music and sounds for multimedia.

During this two-year course students take part in live music events, visits to music studios and live performances and will be in college three or four days a week.

How will I be assessed?
Progress is continually assessed throughout the two years through a series of assignments, projects and practical exercises in each subject area of the course.

What can I do next?
The BTEC National Certficate enables students to pursue a career in the music industry or to progress onto Higher Education.

Intro To Music Technology
College Title
: Introduction To Music Technology

This course is for those who want to gain an understanding of music technology including the use of computer music systems and studio based equipment.

Entry Requirements
No formal qualifications but a keen interest in music technology is desirable.

Course Content
Areas covered:

  • Introduction to music sequencing
  • Introduction to studio recording

How will I be assessed?
Assessment through feedback from tutor and whole group through plenary.

  • Completion of a computer music task
  • Completion of a studio recording task
A College Certificate will be issued to all who successfully complete the programme.

What can I do next?
Depending on the completion of the tasks and previous experiences including appropriate GCSEs where necessary, progression could be to a Level 2 or 3 in Music Technology (FD or NC). The course tutor will be able to advise.

Performing Skills - Singing (ncfe)
College Title: NCFE - Singing

The qualification aims to help those starting out in their careers to acquire and develop fundamental practical skills. The qualification focuses on candidate's performance ability and developing critical awareness.

Who is the qualification for ?
The Intermediate Certificate is designed for candidates who may be interested in working in the performance industry. This qualification is intended to provide progression to, but not overlap with, NVQs and GNVQs in related areas. In contrast to Intermediate GNVQs NCFEs Intermediate Certificate in Performing Skills can be delivered through part time study, with emphasis on general performance skills.

Course Content

Unit Summaries

Unit 01 - Employment and training within the entertainment industry
This unit provides an opportunity to look at specific training and employment opportunities within the entertainment industry.

Unit 02 - Develop Technique
This is an opportunity to develop the practical skills required for the chosen art form. Including posture, breathing, vocal training, live perfomance etc.

Unit 03 - Rehearse and Perform
This unit develops the understanding and effectiveness of rehearsal processess and performance skills and discipline.

How will I be assessed?
External Assessment. Each candidate is required to take part in rehearsing performance which will be assessed by an NCFE External Moderator. Also coursework, portfolio and recorded evidence. Qualification: Intermediate Certificate in Performance Skills - Level 2

What can I do next?
On completion of this programme you can progress onto BTEC National Diploma in either Performing Arts or Music Technology

Music Technology Award
College Title: NCFE Level 1 Award in Music Technology

This course is ideal for people who have a genuine interest in music technology, the music industry and developing skills in music recording and production.

Entry Requirements
Applicants must display a keen interest in music technology.

Course Content

Modules

  • Unit 01 Develop and use MIDI sequencing skills
  • Unit 02 Understand and use studio/broadcast technology
  • Unit 03 Develop mixing and mastering skills

Each unit is 30 Guided Learning Hours (GLH)

How will I be assessed?
Unit 01 is assessed through the completion of a music production project within Reason music production software.
Unit 02 is assessed through the completion of a recording project within the studio environment
Unit 03 Assessed through the mixing and mastering of an audio / sequenced project

What can I do next?
Progression onto First Diploma in Music
