TV insider visits media students

College media students took the opportunity to get some real tips from a top broadcaster last week (Nov 9).

Students representing the many creative courses offered by City of Wolverhampton College attended a presentation by Dawn Simpson, Project Development Director, from Propeller TV.

During the talk Dawn explained to students how they should approach the media in order to ensure their work is broadcast.

Shivani Mair, Managing Producer of Mediacove Productions, said: “It is imperative for our students to be able to meet industry professionals and get a real insight into the world of work. It is through events like these that students understand what skills are required to ensure they can secure a job in this highly competitive area.”

Propeller TV is a Yorkshire based TV channel, broadcasting on Sky channel 195. It offers young film and TV talent the chance to broadcast their work to a potential UK audience of 16 million viewers.

The channel, launched in February this year is partly funded by the Learning and Skills Council and is committed to bridging the gap from education to employment.

Students discussed the opportunities available for filmmakers, script writers, journalists and presenters. They were also briefed on the legal considerations affecting broadcast media.

Dawn said: “The benefit of these events is to let students know about the opportunities available through Propeller, but more importantly they introduce students to the concept of broadcast compliancy.”

Mediacove Productions and the college’s Creative Department have planned a series of lectures and talks from media. These events are an essential element of City of Wolverhampton commitment to building links between education and industry.
