College Title: A2 Photography
This is the consolidation year of the A/S - A2 Programme. It aims to encouage development of personal photographic practice and provides the opportunity to explore both self-directed and documentary projects.
A/S Photography or equivalent Level 3 Photographic qualification.
- 2 Coursework Assignments
- Self-Directed response to an issue, cause or concern and a documentary assignment.
- Plus a 15 hour controlled test
A mix of practicals and seminars to support students understanding and appreciation of contempory and historical photographic practices.
A mix of coursework and a controlled test issued by AQA (providing four weeks of preparation and fifteen hours in which to complete the actual photographic work).
The complete A Level provides a sound foundation for progression on to University photography programmes

Pixel~based Imaging (Photoshop) ABC
College Title: ABC level 3 award in Pixel - Based Image Manipulation
This course offers a range of digital skills from scanning to using layers and selection tools. There are opportunities to correct colour, clone and prepare pixel based images for print output or for screen based presentation.
A must for anyone interested in image manipulation +/or construction using photoshop.
- No formal qualifications are necessary but attendance of "Photoshop for Beginners" would be advantageous if you are totally unfamiliar with the software.
- A basic level of computer literacy is recommended as well as having completed Full Time education up to the age of 14
- An informal interview / guidance with the tutor is advisable.
- Use of a range of tools and palettes for image control and manipulation
- Effective selection and layering techniques
- Acquiring and storing digital images
- Production of a range of images demonstrating use of manipulation processes
- Practical emphasis / work on own images and/or supplied images
Production of a portfolio, which should include:
- Examples of technical exercises using various tools and functions of photoshop
- Evaluative notes
- Examples of resolved digital images that have undergone a range of manipulation processes
Provides student with opportunities to progress on to other computer design courses.
Students will be required to provide a suitable portfolio file / sketched pad and a CD-RW to save and present work for assessment.

This course has been designed to provide candidates with opportunities to explore a range of photographic techniques including digital imagery. Investigation of photography practices in the wider context of art and design will be explored, including style, genre and art traditions. The history of photography will provide an insight into the creative, technical and cultural impact of photography on society.
Candidates should have achieved GCSE Art (Photography) at grade C or above. A keen interest in photography and art is important and candidates should own, or have access to a 35mm camera and zoom lens combination.
- Candidates will explore a range of photography including; portraiture, documentary, landscape, still-life and experimental imagery.
- Practical skills and techniques will be developed in camera handling, darkroom production and presentation technique.
- A critical appreciation of photography including contemporary developments, style, social and cultural impact on society.
The course is assessed by completing two practical units supported by extensive research in the form of notes and sketchbook. The controlled practical exam requires the candidate to research and produce images to a given brief in five hours preceeded by a four-week prep period.
Candidates will normally elect to do the A2 Art and Design (Photography) which, with other A2 qualifications, would enable them to apply to study photography at HE and join one of our Diploma Photograpy courses.

Introduction To Digital Photography
College Title: Digital Photo Imaging - Introduction
This course is for those who want to gain an understanding of digital photography and the use of Photoshop to enhance photos.
No formal qualification but a keen interest in digital photography is desirable and the student should also have access to a digital photo camera.

Photography GCSE
College Title: GCSE Photography
Please note:-This is a non guidance course but entry requirements must be adhered to.
This course provides a practical introduction to photography and will benefit those candidates who wish to learn about a range of photographic practices including working in colour and black and white. Candidates will learn how to control the 35mm SLR camera to gain creative images under a range of lighting situations.
While there are no formal entry requirements, candidates should be enthusiastic and keen to improve their photographic skills.
It is essential that candidates should own, or have access to, a 35mm single lens reflex camera and lens, for the duration of the course.
Candidates will learn how to use a 35mm camera to create a range of images, including portraits, landscapes, close-ups, abstract and action photographs.
A wide range of photographic techniques will be covered, including
- Camera controls- aperture and shutter speed
- Composition
- Film types
- Monochrome processing and presenting
- Contextual and artistic implications of the practice of photography.
- Digital imaging
The course is assessed through coursework and a control test. The coursework comprises of three practical assignments supported by research and underpinning knowledge. The control test requires candidates to produce a set of photographs to a brief within a four-week time block.
Candidates who successfully complete this course may progress to AS or other Level 3.
In addition to the course fee students will need to provide all their own photographic materials.

Intro To Video Production (PCDL)
College Title: Introduction to Video Production
This is an introductory course to digital video production.
It is aimed at those who want to produce their own videos, may it be holiday, wedding videos etc.
Students will learn how to use their digital cameras, experiment with framing and composition and gain an understanding of the editing process.

Media ND
College Title: National Diploma in Media Production
The courses are designed for young people who wish to work in the Media Industries. The courses also provide an excellent foundation for entry into Higher Education.
The City of Wolverhampton College has been granted the Media CoVE (Centre of Vocational Excellence) status for the Creative Industries and offers its students professional production equipment and excellent teaching. Students will develop the skills needed for a wide range of media careers.
To be eligible for these courses, you should be at least 16 years of age and possess five GCSEs at grade A-C (English Language is essential) or an equivalent qualification.
All applicants need to be able to demonstrate an active interest in media production and have the necessary study skills, i.e. to be able to manage time effectively and work towards a given deadline.
By meeting these prerequisites you can show that you will be able to cope with and benefit from the course.
The Media Production courses offer a vocational qualification for students interested in becoming a part of this fast-moving, ever changing and exciting industry. We have designed the course to offer a broad base of skills relevant to the needs of local employers.
Group A - Moving Image Students - Practical Productions
Working as part of a team the course offers the opportunity to gain practical production experience in:

You will learn the required production skills from developing & researching ideas, through filming to post production techniques. You will also develop skills in animation and the new media. Critical studies will enable you to develop an understanding of the media industries and how to read the media. You will also have the opportunity to develop the personal and communication skills required for a successful career.
Group B - Journalism Students - Practical Productions
Working as part of a team the course offers the opportunity to gain practical production experience in news production, factual programming and new media.
You will learn the required production skills from developing & researching ideas, through filming to post production techniques. Critical studies will enable you to develop an understanding of the media industries and how to read the media. You will also have the opportunity to develop the personal and communication skills required for a successful career.

Group C - Games Development Students - Practical Productions.
This new practical course will develop your skills and understanding of gaming, one of the fastest growing media industries. You will have the opportunity to create and develop your own games as well as acquire skills in 3D animation, digital graphics and narrative image making. You will develop the knowledge and skills that are highly sought after by both employers and universities.

Art & Design National Diploma
College Title: National Diploma Level 3
This course is for enthusiastic and creative students with experience in Art & Design who wish to improve their skills, obtain a high level qualification equivalent to 3 full A-Levels and progress to higher education or employment.
Four GCSEs at grade C (usually including GCSE Art)or above (preferably including English Language) or BTEC First Diploma in Art and Design and an interview with a portfolio of art and design work demonstrating your ability.
In the first year students undertake exciting projects in a range of disciplines including Graphic Design, Digital Print, Fashion, Textiles, Printmaking, Drawing, Painting, Illustration and 3D Design. In the second year There are 18 units which provide an opportunity to improve general Art & Design skills and also to specialise.
In the first year students are expected to study Drawing, Printmaking, Painting, 3D Studies, Textiles, Photography, Digital Print, Contextual Studies.
In the second year students specialise and the 3 options are expected to be:
- 2D Graphics/Illustration/Photography
