We offer courses and qualifications in photography, digital imaging,
multimedia and design, at levels to suit you, from one-day taster
courses through to full-time BTEC National and Higher National Certificates. All
our programmes give the opportunity to progress to higher levels
of study and our Photography HNC can lead directly to a University
of Wolverhampton degree programme.
How

You can attend programmes on a range of time-scales including short, evening-only,
day-release or full-time, of various lengths up to two years.

ABC Level 3 award in Pixel-based
Image Manipulation
This course offers a range of digital skills from scanning to using
layers and selection tools. There are opportunities to correct colour,
clone and prepare pixel based images for print output or for screen based
presentation.
A must for anyone interested in image manipulation +/or
construction using photoshop..
Entry Requirements:
No formal qualifications are necessary but attendance of "Photoshop
for Beginners" would be advantageous if you are totally unfamiliar with
the software.
A basic level of computer literacy is recommended as
well as having completed Full Time education up to the age of 14.
An informal interview / guidance with the tutor is advisable.
Course Content:
- Use of a range of tools and palettes for image control and manipulation
- Effective selection and layering techniques
- Acquiring and storing digital images
- Production of a range of images demonstrating use of manipulation
processes
- Practical emphasis / work on own images and/or supplied images
Assessment:
Production of a portfolio, which should include:
- Examples of technical exercises using various tools and functions
of photoshop
- Evaluative notes
- Examples of resolved digital images that have undergone a range
of manipulation processes
Progression/Next Step:
This course provides students with opportunities to progress on to other
computer design courses eg. Web/Graphics and/or Level 4 modules of a
HNC Programme eg. Creating digital images, consolidates photshop skills
providing employers with a recognised qualificaton.
Additional Costs:
Students will be required to provide a suitable portfolio file / sketched
pad and a CD-RW to save and present work for assessment.
The course is part time and held at the Paget
Road Campus in the evening.

Photography
AS Level
This course has been designed to provide candidates with opportunities
to explore a range of photographic techniques including digital imagery.
Investigation of photography practices in the wider context of art and
design will be explored, including style, genre and art traditions. The
history of photography will provide an insight into the creative, technical
and cultural impact of photography on society.
Entry Requirements:
Candidates should have achieved GCSE Art (Photography) at grade C or above.
A keen interest in photography and art is important and candidates should
own, or have access to a 35mm camera and zoom lens combination.
Course Content:
Candidates will explore a range of photography including; portraiture,
documentary, landscape, still-life and experimental imagery. Practical
skills & techniques will be developed in camera handling, darkroom
production and presentation technique. A critical appreciation of photography
including contemporary developments, style , social and cultural impact
on society.
Assessment:
The course is assessed by completing two practical units supported by
extensive research in the form of notes and sketchbook. The controlled
practical exam requires the candidate to research and produce images
to a given brief in five hours proceeded by a four-week prep
period.
Progression/Next Step:
Candidates will normally elect to do the A2 Art & Design (Photography)
which, with other A2 qualifications, would enable them to apply to do
the HNC Photography at Wolverhampton College or a BA (Hons) Photography
at University.
Costs:
Candidates will need to meet all the costs of materials during the course.

Photography
A2 Level
This is the consolidation year of the A/S - A2 Programme.
It aims to encouage
development of personal photographic practice and provides the opportunity to
explore both self-directed and documentary projects
Entry Requirements:
A/S Photography or equivalent Level 3 Photographic qualification.
Course Content:
2 Coursework Assignments
- Self-Directed response to an issue, cause or concern and a documentary
assignment.
Plus a 15 hour controlled test
A mix of practicals and seminars to support students understanding and
appreciation of contempory and historical photographic practices.
Assessment:
A mix of coursework and a controlled test issued by AQA (providing
four weeks of preparation and fifteen hours in which to complete the
actual photographic work).
Progression/Next Step:
The complete A Level provides a sound foundation for progression
on to HNC/HND photography programmes.
Costs:
Candidates will need to meet all the costs of materials during the course.
Students should have their own SLR and Lenses (135 or 120
Format).
The course is part time and held at the Paget
Road Campus.

Photography
GCSE
This course provides a practical introduction to photography and will
benefit those candidates who wish to learn about a range of photographic
practices including working in colour and black & white. Candidates
will learn how to control the 35mm SLR camera to gain creative images
under a range of lighting situations.
Entry Requirements:
While there are no formal entry requirements, candidates should be enthusiastic
and keen to improve their photographic skills. It is essential that
candidates should own, or have access to, a 35mm single lens reflex
camera and lens for the duration of the course.
Course Content:
Candidates will learn how to use a 35mm camera to create a range of images,
including portraits, landscapes, close-ups, abstract and action photographs.
A wide range of photographic techniques will be covered, including:
- Camera controls- aperture and shutter speed
- Composition
- Film types
- Monochrome processing and presenting
- Contextual and artistic implications of the practice
of photography
- Digital imaging
Assessment:
The course is assessed through coursework and a control test. The coursework
comprises of three practical assignments supported by research and underpinning
knowledge. The control test requires candidates to produce a set of photographs
to a brief within a four-week time block.
Progression/Next Step:
Candidates
who successfully complete the GCSE course may apply for the 'AS' Photography
or the City & Guilds 6923 Photography.
Costs:
In addition to the course fee students will need to provide all their
own photographic materials.

Adobe
Photoshop 7 For Beginners
A condensed introduction to Photoshop 7.0 covering the basics of digitisation
and image manipulation. The course is a mixture of workshops and demonstrations
which are aimed at beginners but will also benefit intermediates.
Entry Requirements:
No prior knowledge required, but some basic computer skills an advantage.
Course Content:
The course is a one day introduction to Photoshop covering basic aspects
of the programme. This will include areas such as:
- Introduction to pixel based programmes
- Digitising and optimising
- Photoshop tools
- Layers
- Selections
- Paths
- Layer Masks
