College Title: Introduction to Video Production
This is an introductory course to digital video production.
It is aimed at those who want to produce their own videos, may it be holiday, wedding videos etc.
Students will learn how to use their digital cameras, experiment with framing and composition and gain an understanding of the editing process.
A keen interest in video/film production.
It is essential that students have access to a digital video camera

Broadcast Journalism Foundation Degree
College Title: Foundation Degree (Arts) Broadcast Journalism
This course is run in partnership with the University of Wolverhampton at Wolverhampton City Campus and Paget Road Campus of City of Wolverhampton College.
It is a 2 year, full-time or 2 to 3 year part-time course (UCAS code: P500FdA/BJour).
This Foundation Degree:
- equips you with the broad range of technical and research skills needed to work in the digital communications industry.
- Acquire digital production skills using industry-standard edit facilities and a well-equipped TV and radio studio in the University's brand new Technology Centre

Media ND
College Title: National Diploma in Media Production
The courses are designed for young people who wish to work in the Media Industries. The courses also provide an excellent foundation for entry into Higher Education.
The City of Wolverhampton College has been granted the Media CoVE (Centre of Vocational Excellence) status for the Creative Industries and offers its students professional production equipment and excellent teaching. Students will develop the skills needed for a wide range of media careers.
To be eligible for these courses, you should be at least 16 years of age and possess five GCSEs at grade A-C (English Language is essential) or an equivalent qualification.
All applicants need to be able to demonstrate an active interest in media production and have the necessary study skills, i.e. to be able to manage time effectively and work towards a given deadline.
By meeting these prerequisites you can show that you will be able to cope with and benefit from the course.
The Media Production courses offer a vocational qualification for students interested in becoming a part of this fast-moving, ever changing and exciting industry. We have designed the course to offer a broad base of skills relevant to the needs of local employers.
Group A - Moving Image Students - Practical Productions
Working as part of a team the course offers the opportunity to gain practical production experience in:
- Documentary
- Music Promos
- Drama
You will learn the required production skills from developing & researching ideas, through filming to post production techniques. You will also develop skills in animation and the new media. Critical studies will enable you to develop an understanding of the media industries and how to read the media. You will also have the opportunity to develop the personal and communication skills required for a successful career.
Group B - Journalism Students - Practical Productions
Working as part of a team the course offers the opportunity to gain practical production experience in news production, factual programming and new media.
You will learn the required production skills from developing & researching ideas, through filming to post production techniques. Critical studies will enable you to develop an understanding of the media industries and how to read the media. You will also have the opportunity to develop the personal and communication skills required for a successful career.

Group C - Games Development Students - Practical Productions.
This new practical course will develop your skills and understanding of gaming, one of the fastest growing media industries. You will have the opportunity to create and develop your own games as well as acquire skills in 3D animation, digital graphics and narrative image making. You will develop the knowledge and skills that are highly sought after by both employers and universities.
Course content to include:
- Narrative image making and gaming
- Building 3D environments
- Character and game design
- 3D animation
- Working as a freelance game designer
- Understanding game engines
- Digital graphics
You will work on assignments and practical exercises which will take the form of simulated work situations and which will develop and test your ability to solve problems on your own and also by working in a team. A period of work experience is also included.
This Level-3 qualification in Media Production will help you to pursue a career in the media industry or you may wish to progress to a degree course.
Many of our past students have successfully progressed to Universities such as Nottingham and Trent, Birmingham, Plymouth, Sunderland, Blackpool and Southampton.

Media First Diploma
College Title: BTEC First Diploma Level 2
This stimulating course is a good starting point for anyone thinking about a career in the media area. You will develop technical skills using state of the art resources in video, photography and web publishing to allow your creativity to flow.
The aim of the course is to provide students with a general introduction to a range of media based practices.
It is generally suited to those looking to take thier first steps toward a media based career; particularly school leavers or those with practical experience and no higher qualifications in this area, as well as those wishing to re-train in a new field.
Four GCSEs with good English skills. Acceptance will be by interview during which students will need to show that they have commitment to the course and a good basic education.
Modules include:
- Web Authoring
- Video Production
- Photography Techniques
- Media Industry / Products & Audiences
In all units pre, post and production techniques are explored from basic recording to editing and web,camera and lighting skills to storyboards provding students with an insight into a range of media possibilities. This is a one year course where students attend college for four days a week. There will be the opportunity to study for one or two additional GCSEs during the course.
All units are assessed via coursework assignments. The course combines hands-on practical opportunities alongside theoretical practice leading to the BTEC First Diploma (Level 2).
Successful completion of the course provides the experience and qualifications necessary to access the BTEC National Diploma in Media (or equivalent Level 3 course). Employers looking for Level 2 qualified media employees also recognise this qualification.
